The Kurds control large parts of the north and east, and are supported by the U.S., but are opposed by Turkey. Turkey supported the Islamic rebels who steamrolled straight into Damascus and control major cities like Hama and Aleppo. Turkey wants to make sure the Kurds get nothing and will surely direct the Islamists into a shooting war with the Kurds soon, especially as Trump is likely to withdraw troops from Kurdish territory ASAP, like he did before. Syria is spiraling into a failed state, which is why Israel is blowing up everything they can right now, before any of it gets used against them.
