You can say his stats before roids don't point to him breaking the record. And maybe they don't.

Gambling, it doesn't matter if the game outcome is affected. The appearance that a coach or player could be throwing the game for personal monetary gain is worse than cheating to get a record even if getting the record means a higher paycheck.
