There weren't many other plausible explanations for someone driving the wrong way on the Taconic.

British citizen who got confused? (this sadly happened near me growing up)
Dementia?
Other?
Aside: the Taconic was the road of nightmares the way my parents talked about it growing up. Sounded like the world's scariest death trap. Only read I've ever been on that had a flip down 'accident ahead' sign on one bend, because there were accidents there so often. I guess that's what happens when you build a highway on the side of a mountain. Was a non-issue for me since, being under 18, I could not drive on any road with parkway in the name (or in NYC, or after 9pm, etc, so forth. Thanks NY State!)
They seem to have expanded/improved it a lot since.
