"Expiration" dates on most medicines are merely indicators of when their efficacy starts declining, I think.

For example, a pharmicist friend of mine has said that Ibuprofin loses about 10% efficacy every *year* past its "expiration" date. So taking an expired one just means it's slightly weaker.
Of course different meds have differeing half lives, so efficacy changes vary. No idea about Claritin.
