This is hypothetical - the person I'm referring to didn't get laid off.

She was employed when she found out she was sick - after a year off of work (fighting the illness the entire time), she was told by my former employer, "Sorry, we're done paying you temporary disability - the only way you're getting any money from us is if you come back to work" - which she did. She should not have been working, she was apparently still in rough shape.
Although I'm sure it wasn't the only factor, I'm sure it may have contributed to her death last week. It just made me think that if she had been laid off and was collecting unemployment, it might have been easier for her to continue to receive money/fight the disease than if she was still employed.
grrr...
