I didn't like the movie, but the one thing I'll say to defend that cheat (spoilers)

The couple is certainly mentally unstable (beyond just the fact even that they kill people) so I think you could argue that they really do have some sort of personality dissociative disorder that makes it sometimes hard for them to distinguish that they are not the people whose identity they steal.
