because either they got cut in half like everything else, or else the amount of money collecting interest would be halved.

When that compounds over time, it sets the "speed" of economic growth. Sort of a snowball effect, if you will. Half it, and the snowball starts at a smaller size, and takes longer to grow and gather speed.
