he did not come back to teach at hogwarts but became an Auror for the Ministry for Magic.

i personally had expected all along that he would teach and (in time?) become the headmaster of the school.

you would think that he'd have had enough of fighting dark wizards by then and the quiet life at hogwarts would appeal to him especially since that was the only place that ever felt like home to him.

IMO, this was a pretty big mistake on JKR's part.
