I bought a car from a friend, he had moved to CA about the time he paid the car off, his CA registration had the bank as lein holder for 10 years but he never took it off. HE gave the papers and said 'don't loose these, and of course I did.
well I couldn't register the car because I couldn't prove the lein paid off, the bank had merged at least twice in the ten years, they wouldn't sign off on a car they had no records of anymore.
I got a dozen tickets for driving an unregistered car, even went to jail for a few hours a couple times for failure to appear on some (I was traveling up and down the state and nevada and got htem in counties hundreds of miles apart.)
finally one day a judge (I mean most of them fined me even more for my lame excuses) made a phone call to the head of the DMV and they figured the car is 15 years old, WTF is there a lein on a NY bank on the record for the last 12 years? done.
