If I'm reading between the lines, I think it reads as though this may have been much less one side than it sounds.

That it may have been the cab driver who initiated or provoked some of this and that's why the lawyer is back pedaling. Of course the other possibility is that they're going to pay the guy off so he'll recant. Could be either. But the idea that they beat him up over 20 cents alone does seem hard to believe.
