"Their most vocal mouthpieces" were actually asked to tone it down back in September by the party officers.

To a man (and I'm including Coulter in this) they all refused and started whining about their first ammendment rights being trampled. I think they've been allowed to run unchecked for so damn long that now THEY feel that it's up to them to dictate policy. The anger coming through the airwaves when McCain won the nomination was just palpable. It's like this collective group of talking heads couldn't believe that people would dare go against their directives.
It makes me sick to hear this shit day after day and Crash fusses at me for getting upset by it, but I think you need to know your enemies* and this is the only way to do it.
*enemies being tv and radio pundits with no authority or political experience setting themselves up as experts and kingmakers. The run-of-the-mill GOPer is the same as me--just a regular person trying to make it the best they can.
