I think it goes to show that you have to run as who you are. You can't fake it. If he truly was a man of character he needed to run like one.

Instead we were supposed to take it on faith because he was a POW while he still ran a pretty dirty campaign. I don't think he entirely gets a pass just because it could have been worse. But he might have had a chance if he ran as who he purports to be. The result was this schitzophrenic campaign that made him appear erratic. Where he said one thing and did another to the extent that the moderates he might have convinced couldn't trust him and the far right thought he was too soft and moderate.
