There wasn't much animosity after Kerry's defeat in 2004, only a resignation that the Democratic Party was in trouble and may not survive. Ultimately, there was a split, between the populists (led by Dean) and the establishment (led by Terry McAuliffe), especially as to whether to move towards a more conservative position or become more "big tent" (50 state strategy), but it wasn't a ground war fought with foot soldiers. It was a back room war.
The GOP... there isn't animosity... there's outright hostility. And they have plenty of foot soldiers, with plenty of bullhorns. The GOP's going to war with itself.
If McCain wants to regain his prestige, he'll rally the fiscal conservatives and make a fight of this. He was "real" McCain when he said that the social conservatives were hurting the party (and pointed the finger at people like Robertson and Falwell). He has to ask himself now if he's got anything left to lose and what does he have to gain?
