You know why. You've been involved in plenty of fights that have gone way past the point of either side

wanting to understand the point made by the other.
We've all had conflicts like that. One side says it's black, the other side says it's white. A third party indisputably shows it's one and not the other. The party in the right says "A-HA!" and the party in the wrong says "That wasn't my point!" and the fight continues.
