I think I disliked the first half even more than you did, but then I liked the second half even more than you did so I still average out to a B-.
I don't think the mix of documentary style and the straight narrative style worked at all. It was very disruptive, particularly awkward at jumping back and forth. It's not a minor thing because point of view is pretty important. You need to be clear about who is telling the story. You can jump back and forth, but it just wasn't done well here.
I also just found the first half to be plain boring. Once it turned into The Defiant Ones I liked it.
