The director has said he'd like the next film to answer most of those questions and tell more of the alien backstory (assuming this one does well and fans want another, he says).
I think the purpose of the documentary style that opened the movie was to drop you right into the story. Anyone in that universe who was watching the story unfold would already know the answers to most of your (& my) questions. I really liked the total immersion into the story. It helped that I know some South African history and understood the whole "district" thing. I had enough knowledge to follow the story without my needing to know all the answers. Plus it's a great way to generate interest in a follow-up film.
