CityChase Report! (and yes, there is nudity)

So, we only ended up placing 99th out of 500, but, whatever.

Here's what we had to do:

We started off at Metro Hall, and at 10am, they told us we would get our clue sheets at Nathan Phillips Square, about 1/4 mile away only when your team was side by side with another team whose race bid ended in the same number as yours. So we ran there, found another team that ended in '5' and got our sheet.

There were over 30 clues that correspond to a checkpoint and you have to complete 10 (there were a few things that were mandatory - ie you had to do A or B of a few sections, so you have to strategize to include those) then get back to the finish line.

I skimmed quickly and noticed that there were 3 checkpoints that if you were one of the first 25 teams to complete them you would get a 'front of the line VIP pass' to skip a line up later on. So we ran back to the subway, went to Queen's Park, and found the rickshaw challenge. Each team member had to pull the other around a *big* park in a rickshaw. Once both partner had done that, we got our point AND our VIP Pass. (this turned out to be the only physically challenging point - we got REALLY lucky that way, as it was INSANELY hot that day and just the running around was hard enough.)

From there we chose to go to U of T to do wheelchair basketball. Using professional basketball wheelchairs, you had to both do a little pylon obstacle course than you each had three chances to sink a basket from your chair. if you missed, you went to the end of the line, but we both got it right away.

Then we headed east (we were still deciphering clues, calling friends for addresses, etc). At a men's clothing store one partner had to tie a bow tie on the other from written instructions. that was pretty easy, and we were on our way. Continuing east we went to another park where there was a bocci ball type challenge. each partner had to get a ball within a 3 foot diameter circle by bowling it on the lawn. We did that quickly and ran to the next stop about 4 blocks away.

There we encountered a big line and used our pass (this was one of the mandatories) and you had to NEEDLEPOINT the CityChase logo, both partners. I finished mine in about 10 minutes then finished Dave's. Also, this was one of two locations where we could get out checkpoint for raising enough in pledges, so we got that stamp as well. (thanks ST!) (

From there we started back east and stopped at a point we'd actually passed earlier. this was par-olympic hockey. You had to put on official hockey jerseys, helmet, elbow pads, hockey gloves (SO SO HOT!) and using the narrow wheeled sled-things that parapalegic hockey players use, with the sawed off hockey sticks with rubber tips for propelling yourself, we went one length of the hockey arena straight, then a tight pylon obstacle course (i tipped over), you had to then pass the hockey ball 4 times and then shoot it in the net.

From there we went to a church back downtown close to the finish line, where there was a big bowl of live meal worms. there were four coloured marbles in the bowl. depending on the colour one person picked, their partner would have to either (a) hold a python, (b) hold a baby alligator, (c) let a tarantula crawl on your stomach as you layed on the ground, or (d) eat meal worms. Dave dove in (without discussing it, i might add) and i had to hold a python for 30 seconds, i actually love snakes, so, that was great.

Then we had 8 points and needed two more, so we headed off to the Toronto School of Art (this was a checkpoint last year too). For your FIRST checkpoint, you had to, as a team, draw the nude, male, model to the satisfaction of an instructor. So you had to use shading, highlighting, put in a background, etc. Now, if you wanted a second checkpoint, one of your team could get naked, get on a stool on the podium and the other partner had to draw them to the teachers satisfaction. So, i got naked. There were about 8 teams in there, and at least 4 other people (men and women) got naked while we were there. in fact, i was sitting right beside another girl whose boyfriend was drawing her and we were chatting how weird it was that were naked (but, sitting modestly) and no-one cared. Everyone was just SO intent on getting their sketches done and getting their point, that no-one even looked at you.

So, we were done.

I have to say, we had terrible luck with transit and weren't in great running shape this year. Next year - Top 50 again!
