I heard something about this. Apparently, the cable companies won the right to do, basically, head-end DVR-ing. That means...

...they record the show at the cable company and then stream it to you. It was a technology that emerged at around the same time as the DVR but because of larger copyright issues, the DVR won out. But now that it's been settled, it looks like it's being integrated into DVRs, instead. The cable company essentially records the show for you, then you have the option to view it, even if your DVR didn't buffer it.
