con_carne I think you'd be pretty surprised at the environmental "impact" growing fruits and veggies has.

Lots and lots of water. Fertilizer (organic or otherwise, not all of it stays where it's put). The large tracts of land required. Shipping costs. Storage costs.

I see lots of Veg people say "I grow my own or buy locally grown!" And that's great. But there's no way that would work for a city the size of New York.

On the meat-eater side, Ted Nuggent is all about hunting a living of what he catches and thinks others should live that way, too. But there's no way a city the size of NY would ever even exist if people lived that way.

It's all eminently practical on the small scale and completely impractical on the large scale.
