They were released prior to the site, so people have to make a real point of going in to vote for a movie - as opposed to newer ones taht get more prominent placement on the site's front page. Further, a "solid" older movie is likely to get a lower rating than a comparably "solid" newer movie. Not sure exactly why, though I have some theories.
