1. I think they were. Also, yellow-alien was called "a friend" by the child.

2. That's one of two major racial subtext questions that are going around. The other being, why was there a witch doctor. I don't know the writer's intention, but I thought the movie pretty handily explained it as "nigerians are crafty, enterprising fuckers" (paraphrased).
