While the fares are high I might consider them if I had no other choice.

I flew 2 cats once. They went with the baggage. I gave them tranqulizers that would have kept them calm for the entire trip. Except Continental forgot to put them on the connecting flight and left them on the tarmac in Newark (in 90+ degree weather) for 4 hours. They were very angry, to say the least, when they arrived. And I was pretty stressed, too.
