equating the two sides here is completely absurd. There's no "blurring of lines here", it's not "fighting fire with fire".

It's trying to put a stop to the whole charade and taking a stand.
And you're completely wrong on the Dems feeling "they have to fight the people diametrically opposed to the idea," they simply haven't been doing that at all.
Part of the reason the Dems are losing this battle is because they've been *unwilling* to take a firm stand on anything, instead capitulating on every little nitpick the GOP throws at them, while failing to realize that the GOP *isn't going to support the bill anyway!*
So people are unwilling to express support for the plan when A. they don't know what the plan is, and mroe importantly B. they can't be sure that the plan won't change yet again, and they doubt the political will of Democratic lawmakers to take a stand and get this through.
