those two options aren't mutually exclusive.

you can "truly want" to do something precisely *because* you're living up to societal expectations, and I'm not saying there's anything necessarily wrong with that.
More importantly, I don't think the concept of "want" can be meaningfully severed from a societal context, so there necessaily overlap.
