The base didn't find McCain distasteful. It's just that economic concerns trump all other issues when voters are looking at potential job losses down

the line. Obama could have run a campaign banning guns and pro gay marriage and still won. Social concerns are a luxury in good economic times. When trouble hits the economy, people don't vote with their feet, they vote with their pocket.
