I haven't really studied it, but I think the 1 - 2 punch that did McCain in were out of his control completely

1. Bush's popularity
2. The economy as of late

He did not deal well with #2 at all, and he did not run a great campaign. And yet, he still lost by what, 5 points? 6 maybe?

Imagine if the current GOP President was only somewhat disliked (like an average President) and the economy was jut bad (and not awful). What a battle it could have been.
