I think in part it is that conservative ideas don't resonnate in this kind of climate, and the tenor of the campaign made them seem irrelevant. It was

a very 2006 kind of campaign. We don't have the luxury of talking about jingoistic nonsense and bullshit wedge issues like offshore drilling to take a nickel off the price of gas 12 years from now.
