I can see this working as a spin-off/sequel. No need to disgard what has gone before.

Bill Murray doesn't want to do another Ghostbusters? So the sequel involves a bunch of everyman unemployed schulbs who sign up to bust ghosts at a franchise location in... say... Chicago. Picture Rogen and Jack Black. This is different from crappy '80s sequels where the original star didn't sign up, because it lines up a new set of stars and sets up the potential for a rebooted franchise.
