There's a very good chance that we'll be losing our dog Dexter today or tomorrow.

Poor guy has started growling and barking when the other animals disturb him or get too close.

He's 14 and has severe arthritis. He's on a pain med, as well as prednisone and Prilosec.

The pred means his appetite and water consumption are being stimulated, so we can watch for drop offs in eating or drinking as a sign it's time.

He still gets up for meals and to go out, but he doesn't stay up as long. At dinner he comes to the table and then lays down by us. Normally he would circle around waiting for someone to drop something.

He's favoring his back legs more, too.

But the big thing is his change in attitude toward the other pets. We're pretty sure it's an indication that he's feeling more pain.

The worst part is his mind is still sharp.

He's seeing one of the doctors at the vet today at 3:40, but she doesn't have a history of treating him. The two that see him regularly aren't available today. One is available tomorrow.

Today we'll be getting advice about whether it look like it's time. If she feels he's actually in a lot of pain and we shouldn't put it off, he won't be coming home.

He's been a (mostly) good dog and I'm going to miss him.
