I keep a small savings account with a crumby interest rate so that I get free checking and bill pay.

Hmm...crumby didn't look right, but wiktionary says it's a valid alternative to crummy :) Using savings as overdraft protection is still expensive -

oh i have a savings account too that i make sure always has plenty in it to cover any potential overdrafts in checking
