It is slightly amusing to me that so long as the church involved was Christian, it's really no big deal.

I do think there would be an entirely different reaction from most here if it had been a Islamic initiation ceremony. Or a Jewish Mitzvah (would circumcision be closer in meaning to Baptism).

The reason religion is kept out of schools isn't because people are anti-Christian. It's because there are too many religions to accommodate in a fair and even handed way.

There is always the risk of the predominate religion dominating the discussion and influencing children to switch or adopt faiths hat are different from or at odds with that of their parents.

Religious choice rests with the individual, not with the State or an agent of the state. Parents have the right to control their child's exposure to religion and any state agent that attempts to override that decision is in the wrong.
