What do we think of the phrase, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks?" True? False? Maybe a tiny bit true?

(In this case, I am referring to a 1.5-yr old Brittany Spaniel that I watched clear a 5-ft. high fence today. Obviously this dog could clear our fence once it is built, so it might always be a leash dog, but obedience training on a dog that young could help this dog, imo. The pound told me that although the dog was technically a stray, they "know the owners, and they never did a damn thing with this dog the entire time they had her." So, I think training will probably go a long way in helping this dog 'learn how to act'.)
Yes? No? Maybe?

According to MythBusters, that myth is "busted." -- nm

It really depends on the attitude of the dog. If he's trying to fit in and be a member of the family, then sure.

Obedience training will be excellent and will improve her behavior. It will now, however, prevent her from jumping a fence she's physically capable of

Absolutely untrue, it has to with the temperament, intelligence and willingness of the dog to please it's master

yes, but old dog means old dog, rescues tend to mellow once they realize they can loose another family by bad behavior (even if wasn't his fault)

You should email Cesar, the dog whisperer. Maybe he'll come teach you the "pzzzzt" trick.

It'll be more difficult than training a puppy but definitely doable if you're willing to commit the time. -- nm

I'm sure it could be taught to *do* things...not sure about learning *not* to do something. I think the jumping would always be a concern, do you
