After I kept making a big deal, she was like "if you want to give me $100 because it makes you feel better, fine, but we REALLY don't want anything. My father gave us that car, we are paying this forward. If you don't want it, hubby is donating it to charity, so we're not planning on selling it at all."
(It's the Altima. Has high miles - 150k or so - but that's not bad for a Nissan. I can still get some use out of it.)
