I had mentioned on B3 or so that a coworker/friend is giving me her old car for free, should I test drive it and decide I want it. (97 Altima, 150k or so miles, but it's a Nissan, so...) Right now I will have to put at LEAST 1500 or so into my car to get it to run properly, and this car runs fine and has had some work done within the last year, so it'll definitely save me repair money, not to mention gas money.
My friend has mentioned that she got this car for free, and the reason they don't want/need this car any more is because her father gave her a car, so she's basically "paying it forward". If I don't want the car, she and her husband are just going to donate it to charity, so she doesn't want anything for it.
This, of course, makes me feel guilty. What would you do in this situation? Take the car with a "thank you"? Insist they take some money? What?
She and her hubby want us to spend the afternoon with them after we look at the car, so I was thinking of bringing a bottle or two of wine (she loves wine), and then taking them out to dinner. Is that enough?

Yes, don't worry about it, they are not giving you a Porsche. nm -- nm

take the car, buy them dinner. then, afterwards, mail them a gift certificate or something, or make a donation to a charity in their name. -- nm

Have you thought of donating money to the charity they would have given the car to? -- nm

take the car, bring the wine - then donate the car to someone else or a charity when you are done with it.

Yes. Stop obsessing. She isn't giving you a $5k present. You are saving them the hassle of figuring out what to do with it.
