I'm trying to recall any hotel I've stayed at where I could say the clerk 'hardly spoke English' and can't think of one.

I do lean toward Hilton-brand chains, stay at Marriott brands some, and Intercontinental/Holiday Inn (ugh) brands some. But I stay off-brand sometimes too, and really can't recall it happening.
