I have known couples who have gotten back together after actual separation, but I tend to agree with you that it's harder.

I think once you learn to live apart it's harder to get back together, though I think for some the absence can bring them back. Counseling can be very worthwhile, even if it doesn't work out. It helped us get through things amicably and in the way that was best for the kids, even if we didn't get back together. I think things can work out in the right situations, but no matter what happens it will be a growing experience. You will be a better person for it if you don't let yourself get too bitter.
