It's very easy to see how vested interest theory applies to your IM

on the small scale, in terms of how it affects the overall global ecosystem -- butterfly/hurricane sort of stuff. On the large scale, by indulging our capacity to drill whenever we need, we are only encouraging a lifestyle that permits us to consume limitlessly, which I see as having disasterous consequences down the road which we might not be able to adapt to.
I guess you can make the same sort of "systems" arguments to apply vested interest theory to the gay marriage debate, but I don't know if I'd find them as persuasive.
