I think that Dreamgirls was basically just the fact that it was a nomination vote where you put them in order of preference.

Ballots consisted of your top 5 choices in preferential order. I could totally see people consciously assuming that Dreamgirls was a lock and putting it at #3 or something because they were worried that say Babel might not make it so they felt they had to put it at #1. Or else maybe everybody liked Dreamgirls but it wasn't really anyone's favorite.
