It had a shaky season 5 because Sorkin left, and the cliffhanger he left was convoluted...

There's no resolution to the Donna/Amy thing, Amy just disappears off to join Cliff and Ainsley in Mandyville and the president isn't the president. Not to mention in one episode CJ Cregg has been press secretary for the entire term, but then gets promoted to COS in season 6 (ooops). By the time it hit it's stride (Josh goes on the campaign trail) in season 6 it had lost a lot of viewers. Season 7 was great again, but by then ratings were so bad NBC didn't even bother saving the series finale for May Sweeps.
