I was going to split the grade in two - one for execution, one for payoff, but the execution failed to deliver a payoff so it's D.
NOTHING happens for an hour except some noises and a door opening and closing. The big payoff is in the final 10 minutes or so. It is NOT as scarey as the hype would lead you to believe, except in the last few minutes - maybe. How in hell does this rate so high on rottentomatoes? (2 days ago it was 95% fresh, yesterday 90%, today 86% so it would appear there are some reviewers who are just now seeing it and feeling as I do.) No way is this "90 minutes of relentless suspense."
The female lead, Katie Featherston, reminded me of Jenna Fischer but don't let that sway you. Her character was wishy-washy, to say the least. Her boyfriend deserved what he got. That was one payoff that worked.
Comparisons to Blair Witch are true only because the boyfriend was recording everything (like Blair Witch the POV is from the camera). I saw Blair Witch the 1st weekend it opened in my area. The theater was packed for an early afternoon showing. The entire audience walked out afterward in complete silence (probably, like me, wondering what the hell they just watched). The 10 of us at the 1st showing today all - ALL - bitched at the end, even before getting out of our seats.
I hated Blair Witch initially. However, a friend loved it and when we watched it on DVD and listened to the commentary I learned to appreciate it more. I don't hate it now. I have serious doubts that a repeat viewing of Paranormal Activity will change how I feel about it now.
I'm very glad I didn't have to pay to see this.
