Here's the issue with trading Papelbon: he can't be signed to an extension. He's hell-set on hitting free agency.

So that limits his market value, and what the Sox will get back for him. He is still an elite closer, even next year he won't be prohibitively expensive and will still be on a 1-yr deal... someone would really have to break the bank to pry him away.

When he's up for free agency, will he resign with the Red Sox? My guess is absolutely not. They won't offer him what he'll want and get.
