If you find a guy making $500k on the farm to slot in Bard's spot now and someone wants to trade quality players for Papelbon, you take that deal in a

second. Why?

The 9mil in savings can go toward Bay's re-signing and you get more quality for a guy you'll lose.

The Angels wanted to face Papelbon, that's a bad sign for him in relation to Bard.
