teams definitely do build identities over the years, but it's also up to fans of each generation to build their own, and what they have in their living memory makes up a huge portion of that. Like, I'm aware of the WHA days of the Oilers, which is just before they came into the NHL, but it's difficult for me to make an emotional connection to the likes of Dave Dryden and Jacques Plante. I also think the state of your team at the time you decide to become a hardcore fan makes a big difference as well. I'm a much different Edmonton Oilers fan (who were a dynasty) than I am a Saskatchewan Roughriders fan (who were miserable) or a Blue Jays fan when I was one (who were on the uptick). That stuff gets encoded into your sports DNA.
