Never been to Playa, but I can tell you more about Cancun.

My trip was the last week of October 4 years ago. The place was completely dead - their off season I guess? Stayed at the JW Marriot and loved it. Just an amazing hotel. It was very close to everything - either a bus trip or taxi ride away - and we signed up for a bunch of activities right in the hotel (including the daytrip to Chichen Itza). It is on 'Hotel Row' which is not a very sketchy type place. Basically a road with a line of hotels and very small beaches.
