I think the only issue is that it doesn't make it easy to back up to or from network drives (it can be done but it's not simple)

well, for me it would be right off the server

i am just gonna build a home server, and use some type of redundent backup (raid, something).

RAID is not backup, FYI

well, sure. it is and isnt, its a backup for the prevention of a drive failure

RAID won't help you when your files get corrupted or something eats the partition table
