(kind of my point. :) but, i wouldn't go to, say, Guatemala City alone if i hadn't been there before.)

it would *probably* be perfectly fine, but not knowing what was safe and what wasn't i might avoid it and just go somewhere else, you know? it's all about common sense. i think anywhere is fine, if you are (a) not alone or (b) know the lay of the land or (c) not walking into an active war zone.
