WTF! The original prospects were dim. Presumably, (Microsoft's subsidiary) Danger had lost all of its engineers, the people who knew how to manage the UNIX based machines (probably Solaris) and Microsoft's engineers couldn't fix the problem. They thought so little of the backlash that they seemed content with shrugging off the outage and not doing anything to recover the data.
Now, after getting raked through the mud for the better part of the week, I guess they decided to give the problem a second look and... hey! Look! There's all the data we thought we lost forever!
This is almost as bad as having lost the data in the first place.
