Ummm...cause...I could kind of see that I might make a baloony type flying machine.
And be distracted enough to let my kid wander near the thing. Especially if it was during one of the big college BB days
Though in my absent minded professor type defense, I can see that I'd do a less than thorough ground search but dammit I'd sure as hell would've been crunching numbers to see if the flight path (how far and fast it had risen) were in line for the estimated weight of the balloon and kid vs the lifting power of gas in the envelope and the prevailing conditions.
Ummm...see that's why I think it's better for everybody involved that I don't have kids
