In the first movie, there was a slow descent into madness. This time out, a group of well-fed, non-exhausted people who had a fun and normal day happened to all black out, go batshit insane, and slaughter six people. That is a very different situation. And one that, to my eyes, can't be reasonably blamed on pack mentality, but was very much a curse of the Blair Witch.
Now, from that point, what I found interesting was: does the "movie" footage represent reality, and the Blair Witch doctored the videotapes? Unlikely. So what it seems is that you are watching the "movie" from the perspective of the cursed, insane characters, and their own shot footage at the end is what really happened, but the Witch had cursed them to see things completely differently.
I thought she had a much greater hand in the proceedings of the second movie than the first.
