Ok, let's say they hadn't killed themselves, and they had been wearing masks and they escaped and the cops pieced together a case that they did it.

Same people killed, but the evidence is murkier. Then what? You have to make laws to deal with the tough cases, not the easy ones. How would you write the law? Death penalty applies if it's like, totally obvious?
